Creamfields 2010

I had the pleasure of attending Creamfields 2010 along with another twenty - odd thousand other Sydneysiders and what a day it was! The sun was shining and the atmosphere was electric. A good mix of young and old thanks to the combination of Electro, House and Trance arenas. It was a great setup, with the Hordern, Royal Hall of Industries, The Dome & ‘The Giant Circus’ tent being spaced evenly enough apart so people didn’t feel crammed in.

What I love about festivals (apart from the music of course) is the interesting people you see and meet. In the space of 8 hours I saw an Asian guy going nuts in a wheelchair while being hoisted into the air by an enthusiastic crowd during Ferry Corsten’s set, a guy with red suspenders and one of those hats with the spinny propeller thingies as well as a bow tie, a hippy dancing to his own beat and two guys that appeared to have made outfits out of women’s tampons. Libra you could have some new mascots! That being said, me in my Beatz T-shirt was feeling severely under-dressed!

LMFAO got the crowd moving with their signature track ‘I’m In Miami Bitch’, while occasionally ducking the chorus so their adoring fans could sing along with the words ‘I’m In Sydney Bitch!’. Ferry Corsten absolutely wowed crowds with his energetic set and spaced-out visual effects in the Giant Circus Tent. TV Rock was refreshing with their new brand of Progressive House/Trance that made for a perfect warm up to Ferry’s set and Sean Tyas was as awesome as ever, especially when he played his remix of ‘Going Wrong’ by Armin Van Buuren.

The real surprise on the Trance side was Filo & Peri who were by far my most enjoyable act of the day. Their set that can only be described as ‘interesting’ took punters on an exciting rollercoaster ride of Progressive, Uplifting and Tech-Trance. Everyone in the room felt the love (or was that just their drugs), especially when ‘The Anthem’ came on and everyone went off when Filo & Peri played Laidback Luke’s 2010 remix of System F’s ‘Out Of The Blue’, which trumped the version Ferry played in his set by far.

The most anticipated act of the day was of course ‘The Bloody Beetroots’ and after half an hour of waiting we actually didn’t think they were going to perform. The MC constantly reassuring Beetroot fans after half an hour of delays that what they were going to see was going to be awesome despite the incessant chants of ‘Bullshit, bullshit’ by a crowd that had run out of patience. Was it all hype? I had my reservations. When the MC came back on to say there were going to be further delays due to ‘a broken drum stick’ I thought there was going to be a riot. Then finally the masked men appeared on stage and the place kicked into overdrive. Having listened to some of the Beetroot’s tracks I expected a tirade of Electro bleeps and sirens thanks to the annoying ‘Warp’, but I was impressed to hear that their other tracks had way more substance and were in fact very ‘interesting’. In my opinion the Beetroot’s live shows are far better than their recorded material and the Death 77 crew certainly proved that on the day.

The only downer to the day was that Swedish House Mafia heavyweight Steve Angello cancelled at the last minute and was replaced with the ever so annoying ‘DJ Generik’ who played a twisted blend of annoying Electro that was making my head hurt. Fortunately I only had to endure his noise for 20 minutes before the Bloody Beetroots finished off an awesome day with a bang. As far as festivals go, Creamfields was certainly the cream of the crop!
